The answer hurt me, not because I excused him, but because I didn’t.
“I told myself I’d be better off not knowing anything about myself.” He shook his head. “The truth is, I was a coward.”
Ryan looked up.
“Where are you going?”
I grabbed my keys.
“To end a conversation.”
“Elsie.”
“I will return.”
“Elsie.”
The bakery manager recognized me. I left my phone number and a short note asking Sloane to call if she wanted to talk. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything.
An hour later, my phone rang.
Before I knew it, I was sitting across from Sloane in a small park two blocks away. She seemed nervous. I understood why.
